About Defined

Defined is a browser extension developed by HARDCODE STUDIOS that allows users to double-click on any word on a webpage to instantly view its definition in a popup bubble. The extension is designed to enhance your reading experience by providing quick access to word definitions without leaving the current page.

Data Collection and Usage

We collect minimal data and prioritize your privacy:

No Analytics or Tracking

Defined does not collect any analytics data, usage statistics, or personal information. We do not track your browsing behavior, the words you look up, or any other activity.

Optional Local History

If you choose to enable "Save definition history" in the extension settings, the following data is stored locally in your browser only:

  • The word you looked up
  • The first definition text (when available)
  • Source links to dictionary websites
  • The page URL where you triggered the lookup
  • A timestamp of when the lookup occurred

Important: This data is stored only on your device using your browser's local storage. It is never transmitted to our servers or any third parties. You can export or clear this data at any time through the extension's Options page.

Dictionary API Usage

When you look up a word, Defined sends a request to the Free Dictionary API (api.dictionaryapi.dev) containing only the word you want to define. No personal information is included in these requests. Please refer to the Free Dictionary API's privacy policy for their data practices.

Data Storage and Security

All data associated with Defined is stored locally on your device. We do not maintain any servers that store your information. The extension operates entirely within your browser environment.

Browser Permissions

Defined requires the following permissions:

  • Storage: To save your preferences and optional history
  • Context Menus: To add "Define selection" to right-click menus
  • Active Tab & Scripting: To display definition bubbles on web pages
  • Host Permission (https://api.dictionaryapi.dev/*): To access the Free Dictionary API for word definitions

Note: The host permission to api.dictionaryapi.dev is required for the extension's core functionality - fetching word definitions. This is the only external domain the extension communicates with.

Third-Party Services

Defined uses the Free Dictionary API (api.dictionaryapi.dev) to fetch word definitions. This is the only external service we use. We do not share any personal information with this service - only the word you want to define.

The extension also provides links to external dictionary websites (dictionary.com, Merriam-Webster, Wiktionary) for additional information. These are external links and are subject to their respective privacy policies.

Your Rights and Controls

You have complete control over your data:

  • Enable or disable history saving at any time
  • Export your definition history as a file
  • Clear all stored data through the Options page
  • Uninstall the extension to remove all associated data

Updates to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
